Woman Stabbed in Birmingham City Bus Stop Attack Succumbs to Injuries
The female victim stabbed repeatedly in the neck in an unprovoked attack near a bus shelter in Birmingham has died, authorities verified.
The deceased woman, aged 34 years, came under attack on Smallbrook Queensway street, right beside the Bullring shopping centre, just prior to 9 PM GMT Friday evening, according to police statements.
The suspect, 21, appeared before Birmingham court Monday morning, charged over the violent incident.
He was previously accused with attempted murder however after the victim's passing charges were upgraded to murder.
Police Response
The force said police personnel will remain around the city centre through Monday to offer reassurance, and investigators were supporting the woman's family.
Detectives are appealing any eyewitnesses who may have seen Mr Rafael, identified as British citizen of Black ethnicity, reportedly dressed in grey athletic wear, black hat, trainers and rucksack.
Attack Site Details
The stabbing happened outside the Bullring shopping centre, opposite the main entrance to Birmingham New Street station.
Law enforcement confirmed they were treating it as "unprovoked attack" and Det Insp James Nix said they were working to understand the motive behind.
Eyewitness Reports
Shalini Doal, employed in the vicinity, recounted paramedic and police activity after completing her work period at about 22:00 on Friday.
She characterized the location as "quite chaotic", adding that some of her colleagues heard a commotion around 9 PM.
"A lot of co-workers take public transport, ride the tramline... our safety is at risk essentially, in the downtown area."
Ashley Birks, twenty-five, from Stoke-on-Trent, said he came to Birmingham fairly regularly visiting his partner who lives in the city, expressing concern about what had happened.
"It causes concern about my partner," he said.
"She doesn't drive employed at major concert locations... and to think a totally random act occurred, understandably, it's horrible."
