The Developer's Troubled Shooter Project Marathon Is Making a Comeback

Marathon, Bungie's much-anticipated game, has made a reappearance with the news of a closed technical test scheduled to run later this month.

A Rocky Development Journey

First announced during the 2023 gaming showcase, Marathon has experienced a tumultuous creation process. Last fall, the developer announced it was aiming to begin alpha testing during the coming year. A period of silence followed, until the game was re-revealed in spring with a planned September release. However, following initial testing led to mixed reactions, Bungie announced in June that it was postponing the game's launch.

Avoiding Past Mistakes

Though the title has already encountered its portion of issues, Bungie appears determined to ensure Marathon doesn't suffer the same outcome as other games. Currently, it appears the game's development is finally getting back on track, as Bungie just revealed that it has conducted multiple private tests to gather feedback on the game" since this past summer. The developer is expanding access, allowing more players to get an early look of the experience via an forthcoming "closed technical test."

Exclusive Testing Information

Considering it's a private technical test, it's naturally limited access than, for example, an open beta. To participate in the technical test — which runs from Oct. 22 at 10 a.m. PDT to October 28th — participants must satisfy the following requirements:

  • Apply via their platform
  • Reside in supported regions
  • Own a PlayStation 5, Xbox console, or compatible computer (minimum PC specs include an Intel Core i5-6600 processor, supported graphics card, and sufficient memory)
  • Participate in their community platform
  • Complete confidentiality agreement via the online community

Application Process

Registration is currently available, and to be considered for the technical test, players must complete registration by Oct. 16 at 4 p.m. PDT. Players on Windows PC can also register via the digital platform starting on Oct. 13 at 10 a.m. PDT, with Steam applications due by Oct. 26 at 4 p.m. PDT. Bungie will notify selected participants and inform them of the following procedures.

"This represents a crucial milestone for us as we evaluate enhancements since Marathon's Alpha, including multiple locations, five runner shells, prox chat, adjusted gameplay rhythm, individual matchmaking, enhanced narrative elements, and additional features," the studio stated. "That said, the Technical Test build is a development build and will only include a portion of what's planned for Marathon's full release, focused on the initial gameplay moments."

Additional Information

More info about the technical test and the game itself can be located on Marathon's support section. But for players who aren't selected for the test (or don't have time), there's positive developments: Bungie says a official announcement on the state of the game is the following item on the schedule once the trial concludes.

"There will be a public update on Marathon's development in the coming months after the Closed Technical Test!" Bungie announced.
