Miami Heat & Portland Trail Blazers Claim Initial Victories After Recent Detentions

NBA game action

The Miami Heat recorded 86 first-half points versus the Grizzlies

Miami Heat secured a decisive 146 to 114 victory against the Grizzlies in their first NBA match after guard Terry Rozier was arrested over suspected unlawful sports betting.

Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups was also arrested in connection with a extensive federal investigation into sports betting. Both men deny the allegations.

But, the Heat were focused as they recorded eighty-six opening half points to be ahead of the Grizzlies by 39 after two quarters, the largest half-time advantage in the franchise's 37 year history.

Adebayo led the way with 24 points and later stated Terry had the team's full backing.

"We support him. Complete backing," Adebayo stated. "We are with him all the way. He's like family ultimately."

Heat coach Spoelstra added: "Rozier is a person who is important to everyone. He's had a beneficial influence on our team.

"We send our thoughts and our care for him as he faces the situation."

Portland also won their first game after the arrests, with Brazilian Splitter stepping in as interim coach in Billups' absence and leading the team to a convincing 139 to 119 win against the Warriors.

"We all had great experiences with Billups and how he coached," Splitter said. "We're thinking of him and his family but our focus is on the game."

NBA Commissioner Silver 'Upset' by Arrests

Speaking about the detentions for the initial occasion, league head Silver stated he was "deeply disturbed" by the incidents of the recent days.

"There's nothing more important to the NBA and its fans than the fairness of the competition," he informed Amazon Prime. "And so I felt uneasy. It was disturbing."

Silver also mentioned an NBA investigation into the player's actions in March 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a match he played for the Hornets against the New Orleans Pelicans, found nothing untoward.

"We were informed by the authorities and the gambling firms," he continued.

"We investigated the matter and were very transparent about it. Although there was that aberrational betting, we, frankly, found no evidence.

"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can do all kinds of things that the NBA can't do.

"So, we've been cooperating since then. And, of course, what they revealed yesterday was an indictment.

"And 30 months later, he still hasn't been convicted of anything, in fairness to Rozier.

"Clearly, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a balance in this case between protecting people's rights and investigating."
