JPMorgan Chase Requires Fingerprint or Eye Scans for Main Office Admission
The financial institution has notified personnel working at its state-of-the-art corporate base in NYC that they have to submit their biometric data to access the high-value building.
Change from Optional to Required
The financial firm had initially intended for the registration of physical identifiers at its recently opened high-rise to be optional.
However, employees of the leading financial institution who have begun work at the corporate hub since this summer have been sent communications stating that biometric entry was now "compulsory".
Understanding the Biometric System
Biometric access requires employees to provide their eye patterns to gain access security gates in the main floor instead of scanning their access passes.
Office Complex Information
The bank's headquarters, which reportedly required an investment of three billion dollars to develop, will eventually act as a home for 10,000 employees once it is fully occupied before year-end.
Security Rationale
JP Morgan opted not to respond but it is understood that the employment of biological markers for admission is designed to make the premises better protected.
Exemption Provisions
There are special provisions for certain staff members who will retain the ability to use a badge for entry, although the requirements for who will employ more standard badge entry remains unclear.
Complementary Digital Tools
In addition to the deployment of physical identifier systems, the bank has also launched the "Work at JPMC" smartphone application, which serves as a electronic pass and portal for staff resources.
The application permits employees to manage external entry, use building layouts of the premises and arrange in advance meals from the premises' multiple on-site dining vendors.
Security Context
The implementation of stricter access protocols comes as US corporations, especially those with substantial activities in the city, look to strengthen protection following the shooting of the top executive of one of the leading healthcare providers in recent months.
The CEO, the boss of UnitedHealthcare, was the victim of the attack not far from JP Morgan's offices.
Future Expansion Possibilities
It is not known if the financial firm plans to deploy biometric access for personnel at its branches in other important economic centers, such as the UK capital.
Broader Workplace Monitoring Trends
The action comes within controversy over the use of systems to observe staff by their companies, including monitoring workplace presence.
Earlier this year, all JP Morgan workers on flexible arrangements were directed they are required to come back to the physical location full-time.
Leadership Viewpoint
The organization's head, Jamie Dimon, has described JP Morgan's state-of-the-art 60-storey headquarters as a "beautiful physical manifestation" of the organization.
The executive, one of the influential banking figures, this week alerted that the likelihood of the US stock market experiencing a decline was much more substantial than many investors thought.
