Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that individuals who stop using popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a leading health publication points out that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People using such drugs should be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to starting mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually see a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Experts propose the way of the drugs accounts for the amplified rebound.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It was like something activating and you become starving," described an individual.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers stress that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
