A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the national leader.
The leader announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its duties in civilian projects. They were built at an accelerated rate, defying predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked significant concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party called for an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national projects.
